Tour Description

Discover the old city of Ortigia, an open-air museum encircled by the sea and an archive of ancient history mingling the past and present in a labyrinth of vibrant white limestone streets. A highlight in May and June will be to attend a performance of an ancient Greek play in the original theatre where Aeschylus and Euripides performed. Explore the legendary resort town of Taormina with its mediaeval streets and ancient Greek theatre, and visit the imposing Mount Etna, a feature of the landscape from many points in Sicily.

Day 1:

Siracusa The tour begins at your accommodation in Siracusa. Meet for an aperitivi and dinner including an introductory talk. (D)


Day 2:

Ortigia Visit the colourful and busy markets near the ruins of the temple of Apollo. Enjoy lunch with tastings of some local specialities. Explore the historical centre of Ortigia including the spectacular cathedral once a temple to Athena. In the late afternoon visit a Greek theatre where performances of ancient Greek playwrights are still regularly performed. Enjoy an afternoon aperitivi. In May & June a live performance of an ancient Greek play in the Greek Theatre will be included. Dinner is at leisure. (B,L)


Day 3:

Noto Travel to Noto, the architectural capital of the Baroque cities, and taste the best cannoli and coffee of the area. Visit Villa Tellaro, a roman villa with mosaics representing a scene with Hector, Odysseus and Achilles, identified by inscriptions in ancient Greek. In the afternoon enjoy a performance of medieval warfare in the very characteristic local Pupi, puppet theatre. Visit ancient Jewish mikveh ritual baths several levels underground, and the fountain of Arethusa, the setting of a delightful myth of desire and deception. (B)


Day 4:

Catania – Taormina After a late start, transfer to Taormina, stopping en-route in Catania to see the fish markets, histo rical centre and have lunch. This afternoon settle into your new accommodation, a small family run residence in the historical centre of Taormina, overlooking the sea. (B,L,D)


Day 5:

Taormina Guided tour of Taormina including the Greek / Roman theatre. Time at leisure in the afternoon to explore the streets and shops of this fascinating small town. (B,L,D)


Day 6:

Mount Etna Today visit Mount Etna with the services of a local vulcanologist. Stop for lunch and a wine tasting at a family wine estate. Enjoy a final dinner in an outdoor restaurant in the balmy streets of Taormina. (B,L,D)


Day 7:

Catania Mid morning group transfer to Catania Airport. (B)
