Lazio region & Rome - Italy

The Eternal City of Rome, the capital and gateway of Italy, is located in the region of Lazio, the cradle of Roman civilization and Christian culture. This is a land of lakes and legends, of thermal spas and history, of ancient roads and verdant hills, a region of central Italy bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea, traversed by the waters of the Tiber River and characterized by hills and mountains,  that slope down towards the coast.

In Rome, visit the famous Colosseum, walk among the ruins of the Roman Forum and visit the Pantheon, sip a café in Piazza Navona whilst admiring Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, visit the lively morning fresh produce markets of Campo dei Fiori and cosmopolitan Trastevere. Enjoy gelato on the Spanish Steps, shop on Via Veneto and throw a coin into the 18th Century Trevi Fountain (meaning you will return to the Eternal city).  The tranquility of Villa Borghese beckons, the most famous city park for walking and cycling with its majestic views over Rome and the Borghese Gallery with its masterpieces.
Discover the famous Mouth of Truth, a marble carving representing the face of a faun near the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin; that according to legend, swallows the hands of liars. Follow the banks of the Tiber River to Castel Sant’Angelo, a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian, a prison and a shelter for popes.

No visit to Rome is complete without  viewing the magnificent Vatican City, seat of the Papal State and home to the famous Piazza San Pietro, with the 16th-Century colonnade by Bernini and the magnificent Sistine Chapel, with its precious 'Last Judgement ' masterpiece by Michelangelo from the 16th century.

There are many easily accessible day trips from Rome. Ostia is a well-known sea resort on Lazio's coast holding the ruins of Ostia Antica (ancient Ostia), the best example of a Roman town that can still be observed today.

Thermal spas built by the Romans include Tivoli, famous however for the artistic beauties it contains, like Villa D’Este, with its splendid fountains, gardens and magnificent palace of the Renaissance, and Villa Adriana, the ancient residence of emperor Hadrian – both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

In the shadow of Rome, many small villages are scattered across the surrounding countryside of Lazio.  These include Civitavecchia (a major cruise and ferry port connecting central Italy to Sardinia, Sicily, Malta and Barcelona), Pastena, Subiaco, Civita di Bagnoregio and Viterbo, home of Palazzo dei Papi (Popes' Palace), residence for the popes since 1255. The famous Spaghetti all'Amatriciana dish originates from the town of Amatrice in the mountainous province of Rieti in Lazio.

The villages of Lazio are small urban settlements that arose as strategic defenses along ancient roads, often positioned high on rocky outcrops.  Surrounded by ancient stone walls, these villages appear as if still living in the Middle Ages, offering visitors a multifaceted Lazio with all its unique nature and charm.  The region of Lazio is rich in history and natural beauty with many traces left by the Etruscans, Romans and successive populations.
